Skin biopsy

Skin biopsy

Skin biopsy where a small portion of the skin tissue is removed from the site that appears abnormal due to lesion or overgrowth; and sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination. It is a medical procedure undertaken to understand the cause or diagnose the skin disorder which is performed under the influence of local anaesthesia. The different type of skin biopsy technique are as follows –

  • Shave biopsy is a technique where the top layers of the skin is shaved off with sharp blade.
  • Punch biopsy is a technique where a circular tool is used to remove a skin portion in cylindrical manner.
  • Excisional biopsy is a technique where the entire growth or lesion is removed along with some portion of surrounding tissue.
  • Incision biopsy is a technique where only a small portion of the lesion or growth is removed.

The biopsy is sent to the laboratory for further evaluation. This helps in the correct diagnosis of skin disorders and initiating the appropriate treatment. It is a safe medical procedure with minimal risk of infection, bleeding, or scarring. Post-biopsy skin care instructions will be shared by the healthcare provider for influencing the healing.
